Geography

Intention:

Geography enables you to understand the world by studying people and places. We become travellers of our Earth by working hands-on in our local area; studying maps of places far and wide; and understanding the significance of the location by identifying its landscape and population. With geography, you are able to visit far-away continents, travel across storming seas, explore new cities and encounter a wealth of flora and fauna.

Implementation:

Our Geography curriculum follows the National Curriculum and provides children with an array of enriching opportunities, using a wealth of resources to build skills and the opportunity to explore and expand their knowledge of local and wider locations around the world. The children will develop a real sense of the geography of their local area, which - in turn - will develop a sense of who they are, their lives and their heritage.

  • At St Walburga’s we use the national curriculum objectives and a bespoke, carefully considered curriculum which considers the cultural capital and reflects the diversity of our learners. Children are equipped with the geographical knowledge required to understand the uses and implications of Geography, today and in the wider world creating life-long learners who are encouraged to ask questions and be curious.
  • Content is delivered through a 6 week learning journey and driven by our ‘I can’ statements, these are used to guide teaching and inform assessment.  These statements are a consolidation of the national curriculum for each year group and include key concepts which weave throughout the whole curriculum such as mapping, statistics and infrastructure.
  • Our skills, knowledge and vocabulary were developed using Chris Quigley’s essential skills.
  • Opportunities are provided for children to consolidate their learning across key stages and within units; this aids retention and builds on prior knowledge embedding geographical skills and key learning.
  • Teaching is adaptive including appropriate stretch and challenge and allowing all learners to access key learning.
  • All children receive opportunities for enrichment within Geography including: visitors and speakers and school trips.

Impact

Our Geography lessons are engaging, exciting and full of great depth in learning. Children are able to explore the world around them; compare, research, analyse and evaluate a location whilst attaining key skills which will support them in all their outdoor pursuits, whether it be in the UK or elsewhere. Children are engrossed in the exploration and the deeper understanding of parts of our world.
